How to Start Using Retinol (The Right Way)

Retinol is one of those skincare ingredients that people either love or fear. And honestly, we get it—when used right, retinol can completely transform your skin. But if you jump in too fast or use it the wrong way, you might end up with irritation, dryness, or a very confused skin barrier.

So let’s break it down. Whether you’re dealing with breakouts, fine lines, pigmentation or just want a glow-up, here’s how to introduce retinol the right way.

What Is Retinol, and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that speeds up cell turnover. That means it helps your skin shed dead cells faster, which improves texture, unclogs pores, fades pigmentation, and boosts collagen. It's like giving your skin a little nudge to act younger and fresher.

But with great power comes… potential irritation. So don’t rush it.

Start With the Basics First

Before you even think about adding retinol, your skin should already have a solid base routine:

  • Gentle cleanser - Ultraceuticals Ultra Calming Cleanser

  • Hydrating serum or moisturiser - Ultraceuticals Ultra B2 Serum, Ultra Calming Moisturiser

  • Daily SPF (non-negotiable!) - Ultraceuticals Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 50 Hydrating

If your current routine is all over the place or filled with harsh actives already, take a step back and simplify before introducing anything new—especially retinol.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

When it comes to retinol, more is not better. Start slow to help your skin adjust.  You can begin with a gentler formula like the Ultraceuticals Ultra A Perfecting Serum - Mild. This product contains an effective but moderate level of Retinol to improve the skin condition.

  • Use it 1–2 nights a week to begin with

  • Gradually increase to every second night, then nightly (only if your skin tolerates it well)

  • A pea-sized amount is plenty for your whole face

Keep It Hydrated and Protected

Retinol can make your skin more prone to dryness and sensitivity, so keep the hydration coming. So ensure to layer your hydrating serum and moisturiser every night, and avoid layering other strong actives like AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C at the same time.

And don’t forget the SPF. Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun while using retinol, and skipping sunscreen can undo all your hard work.

Be Patient—Results Take Time

Retinol isn’t a quick fix. It usually takes time to start seeing noticeable changes, especially for things like fine lines or pigmentation. Some people notice initial purging (small breakouts as the skin detoxes), but it usually settles with consistent use.

Stick with it. Trust the process. The long-term results are 100% worth it.

Introducing retinol doesn’t have to be scary. When used properly, it can seriously level up your skin health and glow. Just remember: go slow, stay consistent, and always wear SPF.
