Lash Extension Aftercare: Do’s and Don’ts

So, you’ve just stepped out of the salon with your fresh set of lash extensions — and you’re obsessed. That fluff, that length, that effortless glam! But now what?

To keep your lashes looking full, fluffy, and fabulous for as long as possible, aftercare is key. With the right routine, you’ll not only protect your investment but also keep your natural lashes healthy underneath.

Here’s a simple guide to what you should and shouldn’t do after your lash appointment.

THE DO’S

1. Keep Your Lashes Dry for the First 24 Hours

Avoid water, steam, sweat, and humidity while the adhesive fully cures. That includes hot showers and saunas — sorry, no steamy baths on day one!

2. Clean Your Lashes Daily (After 24–48 Hours)

Once you’ve passed the initial curing window, it’s essential to clean your lashes. Use an oil-free lash cleanser and a soft brush to gently remove dirt, makeup residue, and oils that can break down the glue.

Pro tip: Dirty lashes = poor retention and a higher risk of lash mites (yep, it’s a thing!).

3. Brush Them Daily

Use a clean spoolie brush to fluff and detangle your lashes each morning. Start from the middle of the lash and work your way up — be gentle!

4. Sleep on Your Back (if You Can)

Side and stomach sleepers tend to squish their lashes while they sleep, which can lead to premature shedding. A silk pillowcase or a lash sleep mask can help too.

5. Book Regular Infills

To keep your set looking full, book infills every 2–3 weeks. Waiting too long can mean starting from scratch — and costing more.

❌ THE DON’TS

1. Don’t Use Oil-Based Products Near Your Eyes

Oil breaks down lash adhesive. This includes oil-based cleansers, eye creams, makeup removers, and even some sunscreens. Check your labels!

2. Don’t Rub, Pick or Pull

Rubbing your eyes or pulling at your lashes can damage both the extensions and your natural lashes. If they’re itchy or bothering you, give them a gentle cleanse — or check in with your lash tech.

3. Don’t Use Mascara (Especially Waterproof)

Lash extensions are meant to replace mascara, not be worn with it. Waterproof formulas are especially harsh to remove and can weaken the bond.

If you must wear mascara, only apply it to classic lashes (never volume) and choose a lash extension-safe formula.

4. Don’t Skip Cleansing

A lot of people avoid washing their lashes out of fear they’ll fall off — but not cleansing can actually cause more shedding. Build-up at the lash line weakens the bond and can cause irritation or infections.

5. Don’t DIY Removal

Trying to remove your lashes at home can damage your natural lashes. If you’re ready for a break, always let your lash artist do a professional removal.

Great lashes don’t stop at the salon chair — the magic is in the maintenance. With a little care and consistency, you can extend the life of your set, protect your natural lashes, and keep your eyes feeling fresh and healthy.
