How to Prepare for Your Lash Extension Appointment
Thinking about getting lash extensions for the first time—or just want to make sure you're doing everything right before your next appointment? We've got you. A little prep beforehand makes a big difference in the final result and how long your lashes last.
Here’s everything you need to know before you pop in for your lash appointment.
1. Come With Clean Lashes
This one’s big: arrive with clean, makeup-free eyes. That means no mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, or oily skincare around the eye area. Any residue left on your lashes can stop the adhesive from bonding properly, which can lead to poor retention.
Tip: Even if you think you’ve cleaned them well, it’s a good idea to give your lashes a gentle wash with an oil-free lash cleanser before you come in.
2. Skip the Caffeine (We Know, It’s Hard)
We love a good coffee too, but try to avoid caffeine right before your appointment. It can make your eyes flutter and make it harder to relax and stay still—especially during a longer set. Trust us, your lash tech will thank you.
3. Avoid Using Oil-Based Products
Oil breaks down lash glue. If you’re using oil-based cleansers, eye creams, or even some makeup removers in the lead-up to your appointment, it could affect your retention. Switch to water-based or lash-safe products 24 hours before your visit.
4. Come Comfortable
Lash appointments can take anywhere from 1–2 hours depending on the set, so wear comfy clothes and feel free to bring a blanket or jumper if you tend to get chilly. This is your chill time—enjoy it!
5. Plan Around the Appointment
Try not to schedule anything hectic straight after your lash session. You’ll need to keep your lashes dry for the first 24 hours to let the adhesive fully cure. That means no gym, no saunas, no hot showers or steamy facials. Plan ahead and book in a time that gives your lashes a nice, dry start.
6. Chat With Your Lash Tech About Style
Not sure if you want classic, hybrid, or volume lashes? No stress. Your lash artist will chat with you about your eye shape, lifestyle, and the look you’re going for. Bringing in inspo pics can help too!
7. Ditch the Contacts (If You Wear Them)
If you usually wear contact lenses, we recommend taking them out before your lash appointment and popping on your glasses instead. Here’s why:
During your lash set, your eyes will be closed the entire time—often for over an hour. Wearing contacts for that long without blinking can cause dryness or discomfort, especially under bright lights.
But more importantly, lash adhesive gives off a small amount of vapour as it cures. While it’s perfectly safe when applied correctly, these fumes can occasionally cause irritation—especially if they get trapped behind contact lenses. In rare cases, it can lead to redness, stinging, or even a chemical conjunctivitis (which no one wants!).
A bit of prep before your lash extension appointment makes the whole experience smoother—for you and your lash artist. It also means better results and longer-lasting lashes. Win-win!
